The Liturgical Year has had traditional colors associated with the seasons. The year begins with the Purple of Advent. It expresses both penitential sorrow and royal expectations. Christmas Season is white expressing the great Celebration of the Light that enlightens everyone in the world. After Epiphany we turn to Green, which is our ordinary color. It represents created life and growth. From Ash Wednesday on, a penitential Purple dominates the season until Holy Week. Holy Week is usually represented in Red, reflecting the blood of Christ shed for our salvation. On Easter we celebrate the Resurrection with White for Eastertide. Pentecost is Red for the fire and energy of the Holy Spirit. It is followed by White for the feast of Trinity Sunday and then Green again as we return to ordinary time.
