What do Confirmation, Reaffirmation & Reception mean?

Nearly twenty centuries ago, the apostles laid hands on those who would follow them in the ministry of Christ and prayed for the gift of Holy Spirit to assist them in every way. That historical pattern continues in the Episcopal Church. In confirmation, the bishop through the laying on of hands and prayer entrusts the gift of the Holy Spirit to dwell with our Lord’s disciples today. Confirmation, Baptism, Reception, and Reaffirmation will take place at the Easter Vigil, on Holy Saturday, April 3, beginning at 7:00 pm.

As each person grows in the knowledge and love of the Lord, they are called by the Church to make a mature public affirmation of their faith. They are also called to commit themselves to the responsibilities of their Baptismal vows.

Those who have already received laying on of hands from a bishop in an apostolic tradition will be received into the Episcopal Church at the time of confirmation. Others who have been confirmed for some years, may desire to have their baptismal vows reaffirmed.
